We wrote a positive comment to each other this week, sang lots of Christmas chorals, and have made some Christmas decorations too. We have enjoyed each other for the last time this year. Thank you for a wonderful year and have a well earned Christmas break.

In preparation for next week we have a lot of different activities happening at school.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon is Bike Afternoon. There was a note that went home on Friday last week along with the ODE programme. We will be looking at the bikes and seeing if they are good to ride and if you can ride a bike. If anyone has a spare bike at home and you are happy for some else to use it, can you please bring it in for other children just incase they do not have one. (By Aaliyah)

Home learning

Just a quick reminder that Home learning this term is the Korero rotation which everyone is doing a wonderful job having themselves prepared for their turn. This is a self management exercise as well as practicing those presentation skills of speaking clearly to an audience.

Reading - every night from their classroom browsing box.
Spelling - from the STEPS programme. Each week your child will bring a list from the programme to learn and these are tested within the programme. I would like to also see these words put into a sentence each in the homework book.
Maths - There are lots of activities on the blog that link in with what we are doing in the class. For activities that are not on the computer you can play maths games such as King of the Mountain. This is a dice game; roll 2 dice and add, subtract, divide, multiply the numbers together. You can also use playing cards in a similar way. The emphasis is quick recall of basic facts and just knowing the basic facts to 10 and 20.

Our School is an Enviro School and are reducing the photocopy sheets of work that get glued into books that are often not completed or get lost.

In my day my small country school did not have a photocopier and we had to write into our own books! Interesting how dependent we can become and how times change!

The home learning I have given is to reduce the impact on the environment and to support the students self management. I try to support all the different ways of learning and try to give a variety of options that fit within the busy lives of children. Home learning is developing the self management skills that students need in their future lives.
It is the 21st Century!

This week our personal writing has been about our Athletics day reflections. Watch our PhotoStory about Athletics Day. If your child knows your email address you will have received an email with a story attached. Thank you if you have already replied to your child.

Our Inquiry is researching about, 'Where in the World are we from'. The children will be asking you questions about where they are from, their ancestor origins including culture, dress, flag, music, buildings and language. Please help them with their research.

Room 23 Home Learning Term 4 2010

Have you checked out our class blog yet? There was a lot of fun learning that happen as you will see on the blog and expect more again this term!
Our Year 4 team Inquiry is ‘Where in the World?’. That is finding out about the different cultures we have within our classroom. The children will present about themselves and their culture. Watch the class blog as the term develops.

Term 4 events are:
• Cross country this Wednesday afternoon.
• Athletics Thurs Week 3, 28nd October.
• Outdoor Education Week 9

Weekly Home Learning:
Reading: No changes there! EVERY night read the book you bring home. If you do not bring home a book, read a book of your choice for at least 10 minutes. Remember to fill in the back of your homework book and get Mum or Dad to sign it.

Spelling: This term we will use the ‘STEPS’ computer programme. The children will have a list of spelling words to practice and learn that has been identified and generated by the programme. They will work on this programme during our literacy block during the day between 11-12.30. Please pop in if you would like your child to share this programme with you.

Maths: At times you will have basic facts worksheets. Time yourself and try to do them faster each time. Do some maths on the class blog.

This programme is a daily activity where children can practice their oral language skills of presenting and listening. This programme will run on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Children have a timetable so they will have to be organized. They may need help in finding, organizing and practicing for their day, especially at the beginning.

If you have any questions please come and ask Mrs Kruijer.

Introducer – The introducer stands up and introduces the day’s programme, asks for questions and then comments and thanks the speaker.

Prepared Talk – Present a topic that interests you i.e. birds, ballet, cubs, fishing, an interesting person …, Write some key points on cardboard and if possible show pictures or items to do with the talk. Email cyndik@queenstown.school.nz if you need to, or bring a memory stick with the information on it. Keep it to 1 – 2 minutes.

Mime – Choose a simple topic to mime to the class for them to guess. E.g. A child in the swimming pool playing a game, a person walking up Mt Everest.

Joke – Find two jokes that you like and try to memorise them, if you can’t write them on a piece of card.

Poem – Present a favourite poem that you have practiced reading with expression. (It has to sound fantastic), use your poem book for some ideas.

Current Events – Present newspaper, radio, or T.V. news. Prepared it at home and comment on it.

How to – Present a short talk on how to do something that is of interest to you. It may be how to tie knots, how to get around an internet site, how to play a card game, etc.

Can’t wait to see what the children bring to share.

Check out our class blog. The children use it daily as a tool in their learning and for homework activities. Although something is missing; comments. We would love to see more! I am interested to find out how social media can be a motivator in children’s learning. To help I am trying a social media, Facebook, to connect with a wider community. Comments are moderated on the blog but please still add your comments and I will add them onto the blog. The kids would love to hear from you. I am particularly interested in connecting with a class, any class, does not matter what the year level is, who might like to Skype, email, wiki, blog with Room 23 QPS during term 4. Remember to check out the children's poems in the posting below the Stomp posting. The children made their own instruments out of recycled rubbish and wrote a poem about the rubbish bought to school. They have presented it as a song/rap with their instrument.

That was fun! The build up to this performance included experiences that each of the Year 3 teachers gave.
Mrs Gray taught the students some elements of drama, Mrs Excell made art with rubbish,
Mrs Crochrane shared with the children her trip to Egypt and taught the children how to write their name in hieroglyphics,
I taught the children to play the ukulele and
Mrs Metcalf helped Miss Sherra.
As you can see it was a team effort and the children learnt many different skills. What I enjoyed the most was working with and getting to know the children from different classrooms. The children enjoyed mixing with different groups of children from each classroom.

Cross-country Race is postponed

Too much rain! Postponement is now next term. Keep these note for reference.

All parents are welcome to come to the Recreation Ground and watch your child take part.
The 7 year old races are due to start at 1.50pm and 8 year olds at 2.05pm. Boys and Girls are separate races and these are approximate times only.

Please ensure your child wears shoes suited for running, no sandals or jandals. They will also need to bring a drink bottle, a sunhat and wear sunscreen.

Children are welcome to wear their house colours on the day.

If you would like to take your child home after they have competed their race, you must see me first.

Look forward to seeing you there!

A reminder we are going on the Snow Farm trip on Tuesday. A letter has gone home with your child. Check the book bag.
Be at school by 8am. Meet in the classroom. Parents who have paid and are coming you will be assigned a group to look after while up at the Snow Farm. Parents please carpool. The children go in the bus with Mrs Metcalf and myself. The bus ride is part of the experience but children may travel home with parents if this has been arranged with me.
Remember to bring helmets, warm clothing, jacket, gloves and a plenty of food. The school has some helmets if you don't have one.
Return home around 5pm.

There are some outstanding accounts. Please make your payment for the ice skating and Snow Farm at the school office.

Fluffy the Talking Cat

We worked in groups to brainstorm a story with a problem and a solution about the cat.
The talking Cat (Louis thought of this idea to add this link. It works!)

On Monday next week we are going ice skating. We had to make recycle badges.

We planned our badges in our art books. After that we checked with a buddy to see if they thought it looked good. We found the coloured paper that we wanted out of the recycling bin.

I feel proud of myself because I have always put a little t all the time in my name. Now I know not to.

We farewell 3 from our class who will be starting at Remarkables Primary School Term 3.

We have sent a letter with them for their new teacher explaining our class blog and how we can Skype too. We hope they will be able to get in contact during term 3 and 4 through our blog or Skype. Maybe we could share and read to each other through Skype. Let's hope we can.

The Wicked Fairy phoned Mrs Kruijer

Oh dear, Mrs Kruijer got a very angry phone call at 5 o'clock (5 am) yesterday morning! You know how much the Wicked Fairy does not like children especially after Hansel and Gretel nibbled on the gingerbread cottage and then shoved the defenceless witch into her own oven! Well, she was very upset because the children had done so much work researching, writing and acting about using manners but they were not remembering to use them all the time. Especially when Mrs Western took them for a Health Lesson about being a good friend this week! Everyone had forgotten their manners! The class thought we had better do something and so we are writing instructions about how to use good manners.

Later in the day we had a visit from Mr Turrell (DP) and he had a very important message from the Good Fairy. She had emailed Mr Turrell and told him to take a look at Room 23's blog because they had been doing so much wonderful work learning about manners. So Mr Turrell thought he would pop in to share this with Room 23. He told us we were a wonderful class and we used our best manners when he visited. That was really good news! We hope the Fairy Godmother will tell the Wicked Witch!

We are a little worried because the Big Bad Wolf is visiting the Three Little Pigs next week. We must get our manners instructions written before he goes!

Parents
Using the inquiry model through drama, art and literacy we have extended the manners theme through to using the traditional Fairy Tales because of the use of messages throughout the stories. If you some time free Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons to read your favourite Fairy Tale you are welcome to come into the class. It will give the children an opportunity to use their manners too!
We are also looking at geometry in maths and through that we will explore the artist Picassso and Maori colours. The children are investigating mask making for the Three Little Pigs play and will look at integrating all these ideas together. Masks from home are welcome as examples. The end product will be a paper mache mask. Our work afternoons on the masks will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please come in if you can :)

Plays and Drama

I promised the children that I would have the Beetle reading group play, Little Red Riding Hood, put onto the blog this afternoon. Well, old camera and old cassette tape did not work and unfortunately there is no recording to show. Sorry!

We have made our Manners doco-drama. If the children bring in a DVD disc I can burn a copy for you. Although you probably do not need to because here it is. Enjoy!

Thank you for the work you put into helping your child to get this information together. It is all very interesting and we have all learnt so much!
We have peer evaluated our doco-drama and here is what we thought:
1. Parents and grandparents need to write down the information using language we can read and understand.
2. Parents need to help us at home to practice reading the information.
3. Talk clearly and with expression. Not too fast and not too slow.
4. Remember to pause and stop at the commas and full stops.
5. When in the drama remember to stay in the role of the character.

The doco-drama is based on the style of a German playwright, Bertolt Brecht. Here are some examples if you are looking to know more about our drama.

Jerome Bruner's notion of forming concepts through a three modes of representation and to use these three modes as a useful way of understanding:

Symbolic: mostly words, spoken or written, but also maths symbols, musical notes

Iconic Paintings: drawings, photos, videos, diagrams (visual representation)

Enactive Doing: engaging physically

Week 4

There have been lots of great stories about manners and etiquette come in from Mums, Dads and Grandparents. The children will be reading these so please get your child to read your story to you at home. Talk to them about reading your story fluently and clearly with expression.

Don't forget the home learning activities. I do not see many ticks on the sheets?? Are you forgetting to use your manners at home?

I was so impressed when Charlie arrived at school on Monday morning ready with a story about his mum and how she used her manners! The story is fabulous. Well done Charlie! Many of the children have indicated they are working on their stories. I can't wait to see them.

Speaking of Change

This week I want you to do some research. Find out from your Mum, Dad, Grandmother or Grandfather a story about how they used their manners or were reminded to use them when they were your age. Get them to write it down. We are going to make a doco-drama video using the information. This means you will read their story about what happened. If you are able to get a photo of them when they were young to go with it would be great too. Ask politely first if it is alright to use their photo.

The topic we will be looking at this term is 'Speaking of Change'. We will be producing a video for the Arrowtown Museum about the changes in the Wakatipu area. To do this we are going to be working with Room 24 and interview their teacher, Mrs Excell. Did you know she has lived here all her life! She will have some amazing stories to share!

Included with the topic we are going to be using the 'Habits of the Mind'. Art Costa's theory about how minds are developed. Along with the value; Integrity which involves being honest, responsible, and accountable and acting ethically (NZ Curriculum, 2007). (I have added the links for parents who want to know more).

As you can see this has lead into thinking about how change happens and looking at integrity with a manners theme. As the children will be interviewing an older person from our community it is a good opportunity to find out about the types of manners their grandparents use to have. To also practice using them themselves and to think about developing them as a habit or to evaluate why they never use them. How do others react and how does it feel? So you will also see this has been integrated into the terms home learning. Watch these videos:

What we have learnt about the Water Cycle

Here is our Water Cycle assessment. I think the children all worked very hard. We used the SUPER THREE to help us to work together and to get the job done. We also wrote our own explanations about the water cycle. Here is the Water Cycle explanation we wrote together as a class:

The Water Cycle

Yesterday I learnt from the Highlander I need to drink 8 glasses of water every day to stay healthy. I have also found out that water is older than my parents. This is because it has been on the earth since earth began! Wow that is old!

First the sun heats the water up and it turns into clouds. When it is going up into the clouds this is called vapour and this is transpiration. When it is made into a cloud this is called condensation.

Precipitation is when the clouds cannot hold anymore water and it rains.

After that, the water that has not been used by the plants, animals or us soaks into the ground and goes into an aquifer. Then the cycle starts all over again.

Each time the water goes around the cycle it is like a washing machine. If too much rubbish is put into the water cycle the water will not be clean. I am going to remember to look after water because it is important for me, the animals and all the plants on the earth.

We learnt many different things this week. We have learnt so much that our buckets are full to even over full! Some buckets are only half full but no one had an empty bucket! We reflected on what we had learnt and done during the week and wrote about it into our writing books.
