Buddy Reading with Room 3

Every Friday afternoon we Buddy Read with Room 3. This is exciting for Alex because his little brother is in Room 3!
We learn to read our stories loudly and clearly. Also to share with our buddies our brilliant reading!
We then listen to our buddy read to us so we are learning to listen with no talking and to ask a 'FAT' question about the story. We are learning to ask 'where, what, when, how and who questions.

Oral Language Term 1

Ella's sparkly rollers!

Ella shared her news this morning. She got some sparkly rollers for her birthday.

Nobody asked a good 'FAT' question. Everyone asked lots of 'skinny' questions.

WALT: Speaking clearly and looking at the audience

This term’s oral report topics are:
Week 4 - Body Facts - find out some amazing facts about our bodies.
Week 6 - Jokes, jokes, jokes - find or create one to share.
Week 8 - Moving through Water - tell us about one way (boat,hovercraft, wakeboard, etc) that we use to move through water.

In weeks in between students share general news.

Good work Ella! You have read the Term letter that went home at the beginning of the term and you are on to it!

Events comming up

Swimming starts Monday 29th February. Remember your swimming togs each day.
We are swimming in the Primary school pool next week.
The following week in the High School pool and back to the Primary pool in the final week.

Life Education Bus is here! We are going to visit it on Monday and Tuesday next week.

We had a fabulous day walking up the skyline today. It got hotter and hotter as we walked.

Week 2

PHEWWWWwwwwww! Week 2 has gone already!

It was really nice to see 6 parents from Room 23 on Parent Night! If you had to miss it John has put his powerpoint onto his principal blog. I enjoyed being able to chat with you individually.

Here are some house keepings:
Walk up the Skyline, Week 4: Leave at 10am. Morning tea will be up the top by the picnic table in the clearing. Walk down past the dam and walk back along Lomond Cresent and through the campground. May stop for lunch if the weather is fine. Back 12.30-1am.

Welcome Year 3 class 2010!

We have had a fabulous first two days at school this week. Many of you have found the blog page and have had a good look at what Room 23 got up to last year!

We have started the term with a lot of getting to know you activities and learning about RESPECT as this is the value we will be focusing on this term.

We have found out how to be a good speaker and listener. What skinny and fat questions are. I know some of the children are keen to try this out on their Mum's and Dad's so look out!

We have organised our class into our house groups and are learning to work with our group.

We have found out about our SMARTS. The word will link to a website that will explain what this is. Ask your child what their SMART is.

We have KWL the Treaty of Waitangi

We wrote down what we know about the Treaty of Waitangi:
What we know - K -
Everyone had to sigh a piece of paper.
It had to go around all the special people in NZ.
It's a small holiday.
It took a long time to get the treaty signed because there were no planes.
One day they agreed to sign a piece of paper.

What we want to know - W -
Where did they come from?
Where did the map come from?
How did the treaty get around?
What did the treaty plan?
How long did it take to get around NZ?
Why did they do it?
How was the treaty made?
How did the treaty get around?

What we have learnt - L -
The Treaty was signed on 8th February 1840 at Waitangi.
Waitangi is in the North Island
500 Maori chief signed the Treaty
The British Queen and important people from Britain also signed the treaty.
The Treaty is a list of rules so Maori and NZ European can live together in NZ.
Waitangi Day has been a public holiday since 1974.

We have written our own class treaty and it is displayed in the classroom. You can view it when you next visit.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Gosh hasn't the year flown! I have to say I have had a fabulous time with you all and you have given me some special memories to treasure. I am, truly, sad this year has ended because you have all been wonderful. You should be all very proud of the progress you all have made this year since the beginning of the year. YOU ARE LEGENDS!

I wanted to add a photo collage of some of the photos taken throughout the year but have had some technical problems. Look back through the blog and you will see them anyway. I will keep the blog going as many of you would like to keep accessing it next year too. I really look forward to seeing you online.

Week 8

Our paintings are going to Russia! Daniel's mum is taking our paintngs to a Russian orphanage to brighten up the walls. We hope they enjoy our kiwiana! Olga came in and translated the words into Russian. It was fascinating to watch her write the words and to listen to her say them. We also tried to speak in Russian. I wonder who remembers how 'hello'
is said?

Korero Morning Programme

Prepared Talks this week were:

There are still some people unprepared and are not doing their homework. Everyone knows their turn will come and it is not a good feeling when they know they are not ready.

Week 7

It was awesome having Daniel's Mum visit today and share her story about the orphans. Just amazing. We are well on our way with ideas and making posters, books and art. Sue is having a clothing drive on Friday. If you have any unwanted clothing you could give her please bring it along to school.

Homework this week:
Mathaletics - a letter went home today about this amazing programme.
If you cannot get onto a computer play King of the Mountain with 2 dice and quick addition and subtraction. If you are feeling really clever try multiplication and division.
Korero - check what you are doing this week and be ready.
Reading - read 2 chapters a night of a book you are reading at the moment. Or read the book from school.
Spelling - find 6 words from your writing book. Write a sentence with each word. Spelling test Friday.

Simon is visiting again this Wednesday to plant spuds into buckets. If you have an old 10ltr bucket we could use for this please send it along on Wednesday.
Wednesday we are also sharing each Year 3 class worm farm inquiry. Pop in and visit if you can.
Friday is Pet Day. A notice went home about this today.

Orphans Aid International

There are some amazing people in our community. Daniel's family are organising a clothing drive before they go on their adventure. If you can help we are going to make some posters next week. Sue is going to share her story with the children on Monday at 11am. Parents, you are welcome to attend.
Poster making will be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11am.

What a week 6 it was!

A letter went home today with details all about this. The children are organising themselves into teams. Please check with the notice to make sure everyone will be ready for the race on Friday!


Worm Farming with Simon from Wanaka Wastebusters
Please bring along to school on WEDNESDAY things you can use to make a worm farm. We are making worm farms with Simon on Wednesday at 11pm.

Korero Morning Programme
Well done Zack for making comments about the presentations made in the morning programme last week. You are a star!
I am not in the class tomorrow so the programme will run Wednesday, Thursday and Friday instead this week. Sorry I didn't warn you before the end of today :( Tuesday students will have their turn on Wednesday.

Middle School Tryathlon

This is happening next Friday 20th November. The students can compete individually or in groups of 2 or 3. The running will be around the school paths, the biking around the field and the swimming in the QPS pool. A notice will go home about this before the end of the week.

Korero Prepared Talks
