MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Gosh hasn't the year flown! I have to say I have had a fabulous time with you all and you have given me some special memories to treasure. I am, truly, sad this year has ended because you have all been wonderful. You should be all very proud of the progress you all have made this year since the beginning of the year. YOU ARE LEGENDS!

I wanted to add a photo collage of some of the photos taken throughout the year but have had some technical problems. Look back through the blog and you will see them anyway. I will keep the blog going as many of you would like to keep accessing it next year too. I really look forward to seeing you online.

Have a fabulous Christmas holiday :)
Mrs Kruijer

Week 8

We listened to three fantastic prepared talks this week:
Michael

Bonny and Ben

Our paintings are going to Russia! Daniel's mum is taking our paintngs to a Russian orphanage to brighten up the walls. We hope they enjoy our kiwiana! Olga came in and translated the words into Russian. It was fascinating to watch her write the words and to listen to her say them. We also tried to speak in Russian. I wonder who remembers how 'hello'
is said?

Zara is looking after the water.  Zack and Hannah are looking after the chook bucket and Michael is looking after the worm bucket.  You are doing all an excellent job!

Our next investigation is how to make a worm farm work well.  We are collecting water bottles and are making small worm farms out of them.

How much food do we give the worms each week?
How much can the chooks have?
How often do we water the worm farm?
Kids, can you add a comment explaining what we have done to investigate these problems.  Who is in charge of looking after the worm farm and what do they need to do?
Yummy pictures!!!!  Thanks Ben and Daniel.

Writing an Explanation

We are learning about writing explanations.  Last week a reporter from the Southland Times visited our class and talked to us about how to be a reporter and how to write an article for the newspaper. We learnt a lot of interesting things about being a reporter and the newspaper.
An Explanation makes clear how or why things are as they are, or how things work.  I wonder if anyone could explain this picture?

    Z Drive inschool network resources.
Art Rage - create some individual art on the computer.
Pivot stick man - Create your own animations: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/stickfigure.html

    Blogging

It was wonderful to have Zack and Kazzia's mums join us this afternoon to learn about how to post a posting onto the blog. I came up against a glitch, technology eh! I have found what was wrong. The schoolzone provider that filters our internet traffic blocks 'Web ads' through the student logins. I was trying to log in as Zack but couldn't get to sign in because it is attached to what the filter sees as an advertising banner. If I had gone through my own logon I would have been ok. Also the user should be the full email address. A few glitches but we have sorted them. I am hoping the children will have access at school too because I want them to look after the blog.

    User: room23children@queenstown.school.nz
    You know the password.

It should be all straightforward at home. I am only an email away. We will have another look next Monday if you would like to pop in at 1.30pm to learn about posting onto the blog.

    Talking Books!
Some of the children are working on some pretty cool looking Talking Books. We haven't quite got them saved correctly for adding onto the blog. Watch this space!

    Week 1 Term 3

We have had an amazing week! Wonderful to see those computer whizzes using the blog homework. I know you have had to help Mum and Dad too! We are all learning together.

    Numeracy: Fractions
This week was an introduction week to Fractions. Finding out what we know and what we can learn more about. We have had a good look through the 'SkillWise' learning sites. Some were too difficult but it was fun seeing what they were about.

    room23children
It has been impressive how well you have all developed your skills using the computers and the camera. I am going to give you access to the blog so you can add your own postings. We will practise in class and you will have to teach you Mum's and Dad's at home. We will do this Monday afternoon at 1.30 if any Mum's and Dad's want to come in and learn too!
Remember to think about our THINKING Key Competancy: "I know when I am thinking when I think about what to put onto the classroom blog." You can share your news or a project you have made!

    Talking Books
In reading this term we will be making Talking Books. We are learning to speak clearly with a clear voice and to think about the audience. When we make a Talking Book we think about the punctuation, speaking clearly and stopping at the end of each page so the reader has time to turn the page. Watch the blog and you will see our Talking Books soon!

    Movie
This week we have been making a movie in writing time. We have had to work together in teams and are making a storyboard that will be made into our movie. Watch this space!

    Kia Kaha
Mrs Menzies started this unit with us this week. We have looked at differences and similarities we each have and made a Y chart about what is bullying. Next week we will have the Police Education Officer visit at 9.05 on Tuesday, 28 July. Also 9.05 Tuesday week 4. Thank you for returning the forms. I see many of you would like to attend the lessons. Mrs Menzies is taking the lessons Thursday afternoons at 1.30. If you have any questions about this unit please do not hesitate to ask. It will run all term and it is schoolwide.

    Have a great weekend :)

    Term 3

    Homework!
    Maths
Parents there were too many options listed under 'Homework' on the left toolbar for the children so I have taken out most of the maths links and made a new area under 'Maths Links'. Most have certificates and worksheets. The kids can print these out at school or at home and they are to glue them into their homework books so you and I can see them. Each week I will move a link so there will be a weekly maths site for the children to do.
    As well:
Flintstone Spelling Contract on the wiki using their 6 weekly spelling words from their writing books.
Reading is a must every night. The other websites are optional but useful. Any questions just ask.

    Kids!
Have a look at this site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/words/grammar/
We will be using it throughout the term. Have a go at the activities. I think it is a great site!

Fractions is our Numeracy focus this term. To give yourself a head start take a look at these sites. We will also be using them throughout the term.

    Term 2 has ended!

This week we made paper planes in maths! Our question was how can a paper plane fly far? Jack made the ultimate paper plane out of magazine paper. Jack's plane flew the furtherest. He measured it to have flown an incredible 9 meters! If you would like to make your own plane take a look at this link. http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/planes.php

    Jump Rope for Heart.
Thanks for supporting us. Our class raised the most, a whopping $300! With Zack making the most individual amout of $127.00. (sorry I cannot remember the cents, Zack!). You will be rewarded for your efforts next term Zack! Well done!

Thanks to Zack's Mum for the photos.

Hana visited us today and shared some stories her mother had written about her brother James. We made a mural about one of the stories, "Finding Breakfast". We thought it was a very funny story!

    Have a great holiday!

What types of worms are composting worms?

We have found out a lot of interesting of worm facts. We have found out earth worms are great recyclers because they recycle soil, plant material and dead animals. But because we are thinking about the rubbish in the school we want to know which worm is the best worm to compost our rubbish so we can make compost for our school gardens. Everyone in the class got busy and googled worms and found Tiger worms are great composters. Bonny found the classification of Tiger Worms on a website she found. See if you can find out some more information from these websites:

    Homework

I have been adding different links into the Homework area. Hope you have found them good. I have not seen any more certificates. Seth has been the only one. If you do not have a printer please write into your homework book or add a comment on the blog to show you have got a certificate. Please make sure you are either using the Homework links or doing your homework into your books.
We talked about this at school. Homework can be either done online through the blog and reading your daily reader from school. Spelling words are used to add to the story on the Wiki.
Or into your books on the worksheet, write sentences for each spelling word and read your daily reader from school every night.
Just something to think about, parents, when you think your child is wasting time on the computer playing games through the links I have provided. Computers give children more 'hits' at gaining and securing knowledge more than any other way.

    Report Writing!

    WORMS!

    Baking

See if you can remember the procedure you used to bake some things in the class. Add your instructions in the voicethread. You need to explain the procedure so that anyone listening or reading your instruction can also make it. I have sent an invitation to your emails. Find my message and then follow the link to get there.

There is some fantastic work being added to the Baking VoiceThread! Well done! I really enjoyed Hannah's video. You could be on TV taking a cooking show one day Hannah! You just missed out how much we need of the butter, sugar and rice bubbles. Also how hot the pan had to be. Do you remember all those parts too? I can almost make Honey Bumbles and Chocolate Bumbles now. See if you can add to what Hannah had to say.

    Week 4

    Well what a week!
It was Hana's last week with us and we gave her a suprise party! Thanks parents who were able to send in some food. I know it was short notice! Hana was delighted and had a lovely last day with the children.

This is what we have done this week.
Instructions and making posters with a message has been our writing focus. We made a book of new skipping moves. You can read it anytime you visit the class. It is in the library.

It is fantastic to see the wiki story is well under way. Also have a go at the VoiceThread, Lucy has! It is under the 'Rubbish' heading. The rubbish you see is a photo from a school rubbish bin and this is quite a typical rubbish bin. Some children may be bringing too much lunch to school!

    Week 3

Have you seen the wiki? What a fascinating story unfolding. Remember you will not get a sticker on the homework chart in class each week until you have added to the wiki story using your weekly spelling words. Remember to 'Login' on the wiki. If you don't you will not be allowed to add a comment.

Super Seth! You have got a certificate for completing one of the online maths activities. Remember to glue the certificates into your homework book.

Parents please be aware and it is important you help to encourage safe internet usage. Some things you can do is to get your child to revise and watch http://www.hectorsworld.com/.
You will also find a lot of helpful information about internet safety at http://www.netsafe.org.nz/.

This week we visited the Recycling Plant at Frankton:

    More homework

I am really impressed to see parents trying really hard to get into the homework online! The wiki was a bit of a disaster so I have found another one. It looks a lot easier to use from my end so I hope you also find is a lot user friendly! Follow the instructions on the right hand side tool bar.

In Maths we have been learning about multiplication and division so have added these links to the homework list.

    http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/games/meteor/meteor.html
    http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/games/demolition/demolition.html

A really effective way to get your child to read is to use this: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Download onto your computer. It is free. The children are familiar with Audacity because we have it on the classroom computers. They read their reading book recording onto Audacity. Save their reading onto your computer and then you have a wonderful record of their reading that you keep and listen to whenever you like!

With the oral language morning buzz groups we have been learning to be a good listener. Could you please add a comment about what a good listener is? Check out our Animoto video!

    We have a class wiki!

    http://room23qps.pbworks.com/

This is the wiki link and a new one. Lets hope it easier than the last one! This term your homework is going to be put onto the wiki. What I want to do is use your spelling words and add to the extended story in the wiki. Follow the link and I think you will find out how to do this.

Parent assessment of our assembly item!

Well parents, yes you too can assess our work!
Please follow this link. It will take you to a bubble mindmap where you can add a bubble and comment. A bubble will appear but you won't get to the one I have started until you have signed in. Top right.

    User name: room23
    password: room23
Find the saved Assembly item file, click on the folder not the words. A bubble map that I have started will appear. You make another bubble by hovering over the main bubble. You will see where to make another bubble and add a comment inside your bubble.
We will be looking to see what you have to say!
